Skellig Michael, Ireland’s Jedi Island
Skellig Michael is a small island located in the southwest of Ireland, about 12km (7.5 miles) off the coast of County Kerry.
Perfectly visible from the coast, it has a pyramid shape. It has an area of only 0.21km2 (0.13 square miles) although the highest point is 218 meters (715ft) above sea level.
It is not the most remote island ever inhabited west of the Irish coast. That honor goes to the Blasket Islands to the north, further out in the Atlantic Ocean. What is special about Skellig Michael is that in the Middle Ages a monastery was built to house a small community of monks.
